HIDDEN GEMS: Fitzroy's underrated Malaysian cafe + a Chinese soup club for winter 🍜

It's soup season, slurpers.

P.S. I've caved and joined TikTok, in case you use it too. #TikTokCuriously?P.P.S. Happy milestone birthday to the guy on the other side of the camera, Liam Neal. You can see more of what we do for Seasoned Traveller, and hospitality and tourism partners, at Near Far Productions.

There are a maximum of 50 memberships available at The Good Soup Club. Although it might sound exclusive, it's how Melissa Wong and Melissa Wong (yes, they have identical names) maintain quality, connect with their heritage and share the herbal soups their mothers and grandmothers used to make them. It's perfect for time-poor Melburnians and new mums in need of nourishment (and a membership makes a thoughtful and unique gift).

PSA » The best laksa in Fitzroy is actually vegan

Have you spotted my new local, yet? Kantan Malaysian restaurant opened on Johnston Street, Fitzroy, during September lockdown, bringing with it "I can't believe it's vegan" laksa, St Ali coffee and regional dishes you’ve probably never eaten. I was actually tempted to keep this one a secret, but sharing is caring. Send my love to Hisham!

RECIPE » Cheesy mchadi cornbread from chef Boris Portnoy (+ my favourite restaurant in Melbourne)

Chef and co-owner of Gray & Gray Bread & Wine, Boris Portnoy, first tried this dish in the hills of Georgia while trying to cure a hangover. He's been kind enough to share it, but also try it at his restaurant. Not only is it of the same ilk as Etta, Embla and Marion, it also takes the wine-bar-with-food model that Melbourne does so well but introduces us to Georgian and Russian dishes. Check it out.
